Survival of the Print media and Differentiation

Markus Frey, the design director from "Kauppalehti" (Finland´s premier business newspaper) admits, that design is not the ultimate savior or wonderdrug for the print industry. More is needed.

According to various "estimated per week spent with media" -research results, the usage among "the old" media is diminishing. (These studies are abundant and widely available for all) Not surprisingly for anyone, the great public around the Western world is spending more and more time among the digital media: web, games, digital tv. What is the common newspaper or magazine to do? Adopt game-like features, transform and shift its presence partly to the internet?

In Frey´s mind, the carefree-attitude in making print media has to be abandoned. Now, a clear message and a unique personality has to be present from the get-go. Yes, a paper has to have a personality. A unique soul, that we want to adapt into our lives. The created identity needs to be different from other existing print media brands, and to catch our attention. This is nothing new in the world of marketing, however.

Frey criticizes the what he considers "overly bad taste" of Finns regarding consumption of media. Much more could be offered and consumed. But is the decreasing popularity of old media to be blamed on the general  bad taste of the greater public? "The product is good, the customers just don´t get it" -approach is weak.

When discussing the success of the "Monocle", Frey mentions emotions, personal relations to the paper and perceived quality. A consumer object becomes more than it is, a friend -and a prestigious one.

Frey also mentions, how the style and idiom of communication changes with times. Guttenberg´s bible would be incomprehensible for most of us today, as its text style is so old. Should print media borrow the style of digital media more? Or, should they evolve and fuse with the new technology entirely? With the arrival of iPads and growing fusion between television and internet, this is not such a small question to ask.

Wikileaks: The Dating Profile of Julian Assange

By now everyone and their grandmother has heard of the huge "wikileaks"- scandal, which seems to be a gift that just keeps giving. At least for us ordinary citizens, who had no idea of the shenanigans that happen behind the closed curtains of power.

I´m not going to dwell on the leaks. Let´s instead focus on the dating life of 36-year-old "HarryHarrison", who is looking for "spirited, erotic women from countries that have sustained political turmoil". (via Daily Telegraph)

The alleged profile of Mr. Assange was published in 2006 in a  service named "OKCupid".
"Warning. Want a regular, down to earth guy? Keep moving. I am not the droid you´re looking for. Save us both while you still can".  Warning noted. As the cookie crumbled, "Harry" proved to be anything but a regular guy. At the moment he is being held in prison waiting for potential extradition to Sweden, where he is to face charges of rape and molestation. I´ve always tried to believe in the old slogan "innocent until proven otherwise", especially in the case of this high-profile individual, who has cost a lot to some major players in this world. A lot.

While describing himself as "passionate", "Harry" states that he is looking for "a siren for love affair, children and occasional criminal conspiracy." He also revealed to be "directing a consuming, dangerous human rights project, which is, as you might expect, male dominated. I am DANGER, ACHTUNG:"
At the end he did claim to be very protective of women and children. So there is something good in there, no?

Now, if this ad is indeed real, I would not expect any droid-looking woman from politically stable country to answer it. It is a bit too...unusual for the average Jane. But a lot of ladies are attracted to danger, if I am correct. Something about evolution, cavemen and masculine straits all bundled together.

The scary part is, that this profile is not so unheard of in the cruel, raw internet dating market.
Who remembers the infamous "Craiglist killer" Philip Markoff? Well-mannered, clean cut medical school student, who just liked to relax by responding to dating ads on the Craigslist. And ending the date with a kill.
Be honest, would you expect that from a young guy like this?

Selling Tweets, making money out of a name

The purpose of Twitter has long been somewhat of a cloudy issue for the celebrities. Passing info of the latest news in your celebrity shenanigans-true. Enlightening us of your existence and gathering followers -true. (Some might say collecting as many followers as possible is the only goal of Twitter, see Ashton Kutcher)
Sponsorship, or plain old advertising has creeped its way into this social networking medium as well.
The latest revelation is the actual amounts. Would you promote for 58 bucks as Tony Mandarich does?

Khloe Kardashian (reality-pseudostar and wife to a famous athlete)  2941.25 dollars (per tweet)
Ryan Sheckler (MTV-reality waste, skateboarding athlete)  can be negotiated
Lindsay Lohan (sad case in rehab) 2985.80 dollars (per tweet)
Audrina Patridge (dancer and actress in training) 1117.68 dollars (per tweet)
Heidi Montag (blonde singer) 3529.50 dollars (per tweet)
Spencer Pratt (actor)  2941.25 dollars (per tweet)
Holly Madison (Hugh Hefner´s ex-bunny)  4000 dollars (per tweet)
Ian Somerhalder (actor) 941.20 dollars (per tweet)
Nina Dobrew (actress) 417.66 dollars (per tweet)
Tom Welton (actor) 2353 dollars (per tweet)
Apolo Ohno (olympic athlete) 235.36 dollars (per tweet)
JuicyStar007 (Youtube beauty guru) 455 dollars (per tweet)
Kelis (singer) 1764.75 dollars (per tweet)
Lisa Rinna (actress and all-around dancer) 780 dollars (per tweet)
Marlee Mathlin (Oscar-winning actress) 217.65 dollars
PaPaRoach (rockband) 1176.50 dollars
Soleil Moon Frye (actress) 5850 dollars

(info from "Sponsored Tweets"") This is just a tip of the iceberg, in reality almost all of the known names on Twitter most likely get compensated for mentioning anything. Like we did not know?
Interestingly Ms Montag makes more than her spouse.
Were you surprised of this organized advertising?

Preventing drunken missteps

This handy new tool by a Colorado-based web security company promises to prevent those embarrassing moves on the internet after a drunken night (as nothing good happens after 1 AM).
It is called the Social Media test, and it is a free plug-in for Firefox/Google Chrome browsers. Program requires the users of Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Flickr or Tumbl to perform simple coordination tests before allowed to post online. The tests include keeping the cursor inside a moving circle or correctly identifying a set of flashing lights. Failing leads to blocking access to posting. Google also has a similar tool  with math questions, designed to prevent drunken emails.

Foursquare raises 20 million in venture capital

This is the latest article on New York Times: Foursquare

Now, after witnessing a friend on a "getaway country weekend trip"  frantically texting her whereabouts to this service, I still do not quite get it. What is the lure of this thing?
And why would I want everyone and their grandmother (plus the weird and nasty grand-uncle and the lurking strangers) know where I am, 24 hours of the day? I use Twitter, but this thing escapes me.

Please, enlighten me. :)

The price of being a Batman? 27 000 dollars!

Yep, what to do with all that free time and money? How about your own movie starring you as the Batman!

That is exactly what Aaron Schoenke did, and the result is pretty impressive. Technology nowadays is cheap - without the need for special effects anyone can make their own movie and distribute it over the net. Filming of The City of Scars took 21 days and mere 27 000 dollars - a lot for most of us mere mortals but pennies regarding action movie budgets. Feeling inspired?
